Written in 1843, A Christmas Carol is one of the most famous works by Charles Dickens. Having been scorned by our pilgrim forefathers, Christmas was not even recognised as a national holiday until the mid-nineteenth century. The national ideal of what Christmas should be has descended from Britain, where Queen Victoria celebrated Christmas with German customs sprinkled all over it. A Christmas Carol carries such Victorian spirit.
